Netherlands selects Glaxo cervical cancer vaccine
British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline PLC said Thursday that the Dutch government has selected its cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix for a nationwide vaccination program. Glaxo did not disclose financial terms of the deal, which is a win for the London-based company over its rival Merck & Co.'s Gardasil vaccine. Both products vaccinate against human papillomavirus, a common cause of cervical cancer. Under the Dutch National Immunization Program, due to start in Sept. 2009, more than 350,000 girls aged between 12 and 13 will be vaccinated in the first year.
